Grayscale applies for the first Worldcoin ETF in the USA. The proposed GWLD is intended to directly hold the ethereum:0x163f8c2467924be0ae7b5347228cabf260318753 token and provide investors with regulated access via Nasdaq. This could create, for the first time, a crypto ETF that specifically targets the World network and its combination of blockchain, digital identity, and AI. The application has not yet been approved. Nonetheless, the signal is clear: after Bitcoin, Ethereum and other altcoins, the ETF wave is now reaching significantly smaller and more controversial projects. For Worldcoin, approval would be a major step toward the institutional market.

Grayscale S-1 for a spot Worldcoin ETF filed yesterday. DEX volume up 40% in 24h across the board, alt ETF filings are becoming a weekly thing now. Might be wrong but this one feels like it dies in the SEC queue.

$WLD : Review 📜 What if the internet's next great problem is not remembering things, but proving you are a real human at all? Meet World, formerly Worldcoin, the proof-of-personhood network co-founded by OpenAI's Sam Altman, and this week it took a notable step toward Wall Street. On July 20, 2026, Grayscale filed an S-1 for a spot WLD ETF on Nasdaq under the ticker GWLD, the first U.S. Worldcoin ETF filing, with BitGo as custodian and BNY Mellon as administrator. It is an early filing, months from any decision and far from guaranteed given the project's unique risks, but it signals that the most controversial identity project in crypto is now being taken seriously by institutional capital. Let's explore whether proving you are human becomes the internet's next essential layer. 👇 ⚪ World at a Glance Marketplace Insight: World sits on one of the most structurally important theses in tech, that as AI floods the internet with bots and deepfakes, proving a user is a unique human becomes essential infrastructure, and its connection to Sam Altman gives it narrative positioning no competitor can match. It has also achieved rare consumer scale, with roughly 18 million verified humans and over 30 million app users. The clean contrast is that the same iris-scanning mechanism that makes World the leader in proof-of-personhood is exactly what has triggered bans and investigations across Spain, Germany, Kenya, Hong Kong, and beyond. The technology's greatest strength and its greatest liability are the same Orb. ⚪ Mission World's mission is to build the world's largest privacy-preserving human identity network, so that anyone can prove they are a unique human online without revealing who they are. The founding argument is that AI is about to make bots indistinguishable from people, breaking the assumption of human-ness the internet was built on, and that the fix is a way to prove personhood that reveals nothing else. The deeper ambition extends to financial inclusion, distributing ownership through the token to verified people worldwide. 🔵 A Brief History World traces to 2019, when Sam Altman and Alex Blania conceived a proof-of-personhood system, developed through Tools for Humanity. The premise was ahead of its moment: build a way to verify unique humans at global scale, using a custom iris-scanning device because no other biometric was both unique enough and hard enough to fake. The project raised over $250M from a16z, Bain Capital Crypto, Khosla Ventures, and Tiger Global. WLD launched in July 2023 alongside the Orb verification rollout, and the token spiked to $11.74 in March 2024 as the AI narrative and Altman's OpenAI association collided. Almost immediately, regulators pushed back. Data-protection authorities across Spain, Portugal, Germany, Hong Kong, Kenya, Brazil, and others investigated, restricted, or suspended Orb operations over biometric-data collection, and the project became a lightning rod for the privacy debate. The response through 2024 to 2026 was to build and to open up. Tools for Humanity added age verification, an unverify option letting users delete their iris codes, open-sourced the Orb's hardware and software, and commissioned repeated third-party audits. World Chain, an OP Stack Layer 2 prioritizing verified humans over bots, launched in October 2024. The rebrand to World reframed the project around identity rather than the coin, integrations arrived with Tinder, Zoom, DocuSign, and Shopify, and 2026 brought institutional interest through an Eightco treasury and now the Grayscale ETF filing. 🔵 Ecosystem Narrative The organizing idea is that verified humanity becomes a base-layer primitive, and everything is built to distribute and use it. ➛ World ID. A privacy-preserving proof of personhood generated from an Orb iris scan, using zero-knowledge proofs and the Semaphore protocol so a person proves uniqueness without revealing identity or being tracked across apps. ➛ The Orb. A purpose-built iris-scanning device that verifies unique humans, now with open-sourced hardware and software, and an opt-out default where no personally identifiable information beyond the iris code leaves the device. ➛ World Chain. An Ethereum Layer 2 on the OP Stack that gives verified humans priority blockspace over bots, the settlement layer for the ecosystem. ➛ World App and distribution. Over 30 million app users make World one of the largest consumer funnels in crypto, and a real onboarding path for identity and token distribution. ➛ Real integrations. World ID plugged into Tinder, Zoom, DocuSign, Shopify, Okta, and Razer, moving proof-of-personhood from concept toward applied verification. ➛ AI-integrity expansion. An open-sourced prover for on-device machine-learning verification extends World ID beyond identity toward proving AI model integrity, riding the same AI-era thesis. ⚪ Token Utilities $WLD is the utility and governance token distributed to verified humans. ➛ Verified-human distribution: verified users can claim WLD in eligible jurisdictions, the mechanism for distributing ownership at scale. ➛ Governance: WLD governs the World ecosystem and World Chain direction. ➛ Network utility: functions within World Chain and the World App for transactions and ecosystem activity. ➛ Incentive layer: aligns adoption of World ID with token ownership, tying network growth to distribution. ⚪ Key Features ➛ Privacy-preserving proof of personhood via iris scan and zero-knowledge proofs. ➛ The Orb, an open-sourced iris-scanning device with an opt-out, data-minimizing default. ➛ World Chain, an Ethereum L2 giving verified humans priority over bots. ➛ Consumer scale, with roughly 18M verified humans and 30M+ app users across 160 countries. ➛ Real World ID integrations across major consumer platforms. ➛ A fixed 10B supply with a scheduled July 2026 emission cut. 🔵 Meet the Team World is developed by Tools for Humanity and stewarded by the World Foundation, and its team is its single strongest asset, pairing the most prominent name in AI with genuine execution. ▶️ Core Members: ➛ Sam Altman [ @sama ] : Co-Founder and Chairman, Tools for Humanity | CEO of OpenAI, former president of Y Combinator, and a serial entrepreneur. His involvement gives World unmatched narrative positioning at the exact intersection of AI and identity, and access to institutional legitimacy few crypto projects can reach. ➛ Alex Blania - [ @alexblania ] : Co-Founder and CEO, Tools for Humanity | Runs the company day to day and has driven the operational execution, from Orb manufacturing to global rollout. His physics background is directly relevant to the Orb's optical engineering, and he is the one who actually scaled the organization. ➛ Max Novendstern [ @mnovendstern ] - Co-Founder | Third co-founder who contributed to World's original architecture and early development. ➛ World Foundation | The load-bearing steward. It oversees the protocol, the token, and the Orb rollout, manages controlled token distribution including OTC sales with lockups, and carries the regulatory engagement across dozens of jurisdictions. ➛ Tools for Humanity | The primary developer, building World ID, World Chain, the Orb, and the World App, and the entity that has open-sourced the hardware and software and commissioned the third‑party audits. 🔵 Ratings ➛ Use Case: ★★★★⯪ (4.5/5). World targets one of the most genuinely important problems of the AI era, proving humanity online, and it is the clear leader in proof-of-personhood with real consumer scale most identity projects never approach: roughly 18 million verified humans, 30 million-plus app users, and live integrations with Tinder, Zoom, and DocuSign. The Altman connection and the AI-integrity narrative give it structural relevance. The half-point deduction reflects that proof-of-personhood is not yet a universal must‑have, competitors range from government digital IDs to hardware attestation, and the token’s direct link to identity adoption is still maturing. ➛ Tokenomics: ★★★⯪☆ (3.5/5). The distribution intent is genuinely community‑weighted at 75%, which is unusually high, and the fixed 10B cap plus the scheduled July 2026 emission cut show active supply management rather than neglect. The half-point deduction comes from overhang and incomplete value capture: only around 35% of supply is unlocked with years of emissions still ahead, on‑chain ownership remains concentrated, and there is not yet a fully proven mechanism by which the token captures value from identity adoption, so WLD still trades heavily as a narrative asset tied to Altman and AI headlines. ➛ Audits: ★★★★⯪ (4.5/5). World's security and privacy stack is among the most thoroughly reviewed in the series, and by named top‑tier firms: Trail of Bits audited the Orb's software and validated its PII‑handling claims, Nethermind audited the smart contracts including the World ID and WLD contracts, and Least Authority reviewed the cryptography and found it generally well‑designed, with formal verification work and open‑sourced components throughout. The half-point deduction acknowledges that the attack surface remains unusually broad and partly physical, spanning Orb hardware, biometric pipelines, and operator access, areas where audits can only partly cover residual operational risk. ➛ Community: ★★★★ (4/5). World has genuine scale and unusually high name recognition for a crypto project, driven by Altman, with tens of millions of app users, a global Orb‑verification footprint across 160 countries, and a real developer ecosystem building on World Chain and World ID. The 1‑point deduction is that the community is polarized in a way few projects are: the same biometric model that draws users draws sustained criticism from privacy advocates and regulators, and much of the holder base is distribution‑driven and speculative rather than ideologically committed, which shows up in sentiment that swings hard on Altman and AI headlines. 🔵 Conclusion World is one of the most ambitious and most polarizing projects in crypto, and both halves of that are earned. It has built real proof-of-personhood infrastructure at genuine consumer scale, roughly 18 million verified humans, over 30 million app users, live integrations with major platforms, its own Ethereum Layer 2, and a security stack reviewed by Trail of Bits, Nethermind, and Least Authority. Backed by the most recognizable name in AI and now the subject of a Grayscale ETF filing, it has reach and legitimacy few crypto projects can match. The risks are real and worth naming plainly. The iris‑scanning model that defines World is banned or under investigation across multiple major jurisdictions, and a permanent ban in a large economy would directly shrink its addressable market. Most of the supply is still locked, on‑chain ownership is heavily concentrated, and there is no proven mechanism by which WLD captures the value that World ID creates, leaving the token trading on narrative more than fundamentals. But the bull case is unusually structural. If AI makes proving humanity a genuine requirement of the internet, and World is already the largest human‑verification network with real distribution, an Ethereum L2, and now an institutional on‑ramp forming through an ETF, then it is positioned on one of the defining problems of the coming decade. World has built the network and the credibility. What it has not yet resolved is whether the world accepts the Orb, and whether the token shares in the value if it does. The infrastructure exists at scale. The verdict, from regulators and from the market, is still being written.

Grayscale filed for the first US Worldcoin ETF. And this one's an interesting departure from the usual "big liquid asset" ETF pattern. $WLD is the native asset of a biometric identity verification project, backed by Sam Altman, built specifically to distinguish humans from bots. Tbh a much harder narrative to package for retail investors than "digital gold" or "programmable money." The structure itself looks standard: BitGo custodying the actual WLD, BNY Mellon as administrator, CSC Delaware as trustee. Worldcoin is a different category entirely, a bet on proof-of-humanity infrastructure mattering enough to institutions that they'll want regulated exposure to it specifically. Early, or exactly on time?
