Why Blockchain Ecosystems Should Think Like Venture Capitalists The best ecosystems don’t optimize for having the most builders, hackathons or grants. They optimize for portfolio success. Venture capitalists aren’t judged by how many startups they invest in but by how many become successful companies. Blockchain ecosystems should adopt that same mindset. Many ecosystems love talking about how many developers they’ve onboarded or how many tools and features they’ve built for them, but if none of that results in builders becoming successful founders or projects becoming thriving businesses, then those metrics mean very little. Ecosystems don’t grow because they attract builders. They grow because they consistently produce success stories that attract even more builders, users and talent. Today, many L1s celebrate how many developers joined their ecosystem, how many people participated in their latest hackathon, how many grants they distributed or how many creators participated in a campaign. Those are useful metrics don’t get me wrong, but they’re leading indicators, not the outcome. They measure interest, not growth, and too many ecosystems confuse the two. Interest can be bought through incentives and campaigns but growth has to be earned by producing successful companies, products and careers. That’s why you often see ecosystems experience huge spikes in activity followed by long periods of stagnation once the incentives slow down. @Aptos is a good example of why that distinction matters. When it launched, it attracted enormous attention. Developer interest was high, campaigns were everywhere and user activity surged but attracting attention is only the first step, the harder challenge is converting that attention into products people continue to use long after the campaigns end. More recently, we’ve seen @aave announce plans to wind down its deployment on Aptos, alongside several other chains, citing low adoption. Whether it’s Aptos or any other ecosystem, the lesson is the same: interest gets ecosystems noticed, but successful products keep them relevant. Using @superteam as our case study once again, its strength isn’t simply attracting talent. It’s creating an environment where founders can find teammates, creators, operators, researchers, capital and distribution. The objective isn’t to maximize developer count. It’s to maximize founder success. You can see this reflected not just in how Superteam operates but also in how ecosystem leaders communicate. They don’t just celebrate hackathons. They celebrate founders raising capital, startups hiring talent, products gaining users and contributors turning their skills into careers. Everything signals that the ecosystem exists to increase the probability of success for the people building within it. I believe @SuiNetwork can learn from this as it continues evolving its ecosystem. The Creator Program, for example, shouldn’t simply become a larger content initiative. It can become part of a broader founder-support system that helps products gain visibility, educates users, improves distribution, helps talent build careers within the ecosystem and increases the odds that startups survive beyond hackathons. The goal is to build a distribution network where builders aren’t left alone after launching a product but have access to the people and infrastructure needed to grow it into a real business. This all comes back to what I’ve called the Five Layers Framework. Builders create products, but products only scale when capital, talent, community and users reinforce what builders create. The ecosystem’s job is to make those connections happen consistently, not occasionally. Venture capitalists don’t measure success by the number of investments they make but by the number of companies that succeed and blockchain ecosystems should be no different. Great ecosystems don’t invest in builders, they invest in builder success.
