Aave Labs submitted a response to @HMRCgovuk 's stablecoin tax consultation The core problem: stablecoins in DeFi lending are not speculative assets—they're a form of payment. Yet current UK tax rules treat a deposit, six-month hold, and redemption as three separate taxable events, despite no underlying economic change. @aave's proposal: - Treat qualifying stablecoins as exempt assets under capital gains tax for individuals - Bring stablecoin lending and borrowing fully within loan relationship rules for companies - Align interest-like returns with actual interest treatment - Receipt tokens representing underlying stablecoins (like aUSDC) must be in scope—they're economically identical to the underlying asset plus accrued yield - Extend the definition beyond UK-issued coins.
